Block is different from unfollow – and this difference matters

Before confirming the block, it is worth understanding what changes in practice:

  • Unfollow: the person stopped following, but you can still see their profile and public posts. This is what happens when someone simply unfollows you.
  • Block: the person disappeared completely from your Instagram — profile, posts, stories, everything. You also cannot send direct messages.
  • Restrict: more discreet. You still see the profile, but your comments stay hidden from them. See the detailed differences between block, restrict and mute.

The 5 signs you were blocked

1. The profile does not appear in the Instagram search

This is the most reliable test. Open the app, tap the magnifying glass (search), type the username of the person (with @). If the profile does not appear anywhere, it is a block.

Watch out for false positives: if the person deactivated or deleted the account, the profile also disappears. To differentiate, ask a friend who follows them to search. If it appears for them but not for you, it is a block.

2. You cannot access the profile via direct link

Take the complete profile URL (instagram.com/personname) and paste in the browser logged into your account. If the message “This account is private” appears and you knew it was public before, it is a block.

3. You cannot see their likes on mutual friends’ photos

Go to a photo of a mutual friend. If you used to see their likes and now do not, it is a strong indication of a block.

4. Direct messages continue but with strange behavior

If you had a conversation with the person before the block:

  • The chat is still there in your Direct
  • But you cannot send a new message (delivery fails)
  • Old messages are visible, but you do not see if they read (no “seen”)

5. Old likes and comments disappear from their profile

If you liked or commented on their photos in the past and now no longer see those interactions in history, it is another strong sign.

How to confirm the block in practice (step by step)

  1. Open Instagram and go to the magnifying glass (search)
  2. Type the @ of the person
  3. Observe the result:
    • Profile appears normally -> not blocked
    • Profile does not appear at all -> probably blocked
    • Shows “This account is private” and you knew it was public -> blocked
  4. Cross-test: ask a friend who follows the person to search. If it appears for them and not for you, block confirmed.
  5. Try accessing the direct URL in the browser. Block = “private account” message or error.

What to do after confirming the block

Honestly? Almost nothing. The block is the person’s decision and Instagram does not allow you to force unblock. What you can do:

Frequently Asked Questions

If the person blocked me, do they still see my posts?
Only if they followed you before the block and your profile is public. If they did not follow you, they see nothing. Block prevents them from seeing you, not vice versa.
Are block and restrict the same thing?
No. Block is total and visible (profile disappears from search). Restrict is silent and partial (comments go to approval). Different actions.
Can I find out who blocked me in bulk?
Reliable tools exist, but few do this well. Apps promising sweep usually ask for your password – avoid.
If I create another account, can I see the blocked profile?
Technically yes, but it violates Instagram’s Terms of Use and can lead to both accounts being banned. Not worth it.
