Quick summary of the three

Each action has a different intensity and a different message to the other person:

  • Block: cuts all interaction. The other person is removed from your side. Used for serious situations (stalking, harassment, toxic ex).
  • Restrict: silent and partial. The other person does not know. Comments are routed to approval. Used for mildly annoying interactions.
  • Mute: the lightest. The other person does not know. Posts disappear from your feed. Used for feed cleanup.

The detailed differences

1. Block – total cut

When you block someone:

  • You no longer see their profile, posts, stories or Reels
  • They do not see your profile, posts, stories or Reels
  • Both cannot send direct messages
  • Previous comments vanish from both sides
  • No notification – only discoverable when they try to interact

When to use: extreme situations where the other person is a real threat – stalking, harassment, abusive ex.

2. Restrict – silent filter

When you restrict someone:

  • Their comments on your posts become visible only to them (you see a notification)
  • They do not see your online status or “seen” indicator in messages
  • Direct messages keep working
  • The other person does not know they were restricted – that is the point

When to use: annoying comments without burning the relationship. Ex-partners you want to stay cordial with.

3. Mute – silent feed cleanup

When you mute someone:

  • Posts and stories disappear from your feed (you no longer see)
  • Notifications of their activity stop
  • You can still follow each other and send messages normally
  • The person does not know they were muted

When to use: profiles that post too much, pollute your feed, but you still want to be friends.

FAQ

Are block and restrict the same thing?
No. Block cuts total (person disappears). Restrict filters but keeps connection. Use block for extreme, restrict for daily differences.
When is mute better than block?
Almost always. Mute is reversible, discreet, no drama. When you just want less of that person in your feed.
Does the person know I muted them?
No. Mute is totally silent – posts disappear from your feed but continue to exist publicly.
Can I reverse any of the three?
Yes. All three are reversible in settings. To unblock, go to their profile (if they have not blocked you back) and use Unblock.
