Old Bank Accounts, Dividends or Unpaid Money? How Malaysia’s eGUMIS Search Works in 2026

Independent information guide. This page does not process personal searches or claims.

An unpaid salary, dividend, insurance payment or dormant bank account does not always disappear when a company can no longer contact its owner. Under Malaysia’s unclaimed money system, certain payments and inactive balances may be transferred to the Registrar of Unclaimed Moneys.

That does not mean a record exists for every reader, and it does not mean a payment has been approved. This page is an independent information guide. It does not process searches or claims, collect identification or banking information, or decide who is entitled to a refund. Use the official eGUMIS portal for any personal search or application.

What Is Considered Unclaimed Money in Malaysia?

Malaysia’s unclaimed-money framework groups records by how long money has remained unpaid or inactive. The first group covers money that is legally payable but has not been paid for at least two years. It can include salary, wages, bonuses, commissions, dividends, declared profits, approved insurance claims, expired bank drafts, cashier’s orders, matured fixed deposits that are not automatically renewed, deposits whose purpose has ended, and credit balances.

A second group covers money in an account where the owner has not made a transaction for at least seven years. Examples can include savings accounts, current accounts and automatically renewed fixed deposits. A third group covers money in trade accounts that has been inactive for at least two years.

These categories describe the rules used by the official system; they are not proof that a particular bank account, payment or investment belongs to a reader.

Before you continue

This guide explains the official route, but it cannot search records, verify identity, submit a claim or guarantee a result.

Why Does Money Become Unclaimed?

An organization may have an outdated address or telephone number. A former employee may not have collected a payment. A dividend cheque may never have been deposited. A bank account may have been forgotten after a move, a merger or a change of jobs. A fixed deposit can mature without the owner taking the next step, and an insurance payment may not reach the person named in the record.

Records can also become difficult to match after a name, spelling or identification detail changes. In deceased-person cases, relatives may not know every bank, employer, investment or policy connected with the estate. These are reasons to consider an official search, not evidence that money is waiting or that anyone has made an error.

Who Should Consider Checking eGUMIS?

An official check may be reasonable if you:

  • worked for several companies;
  • held accounts with different banks;
  • previously owned shares or expected dividends;
  • expected an insurance payment;
  • closed, replaced or forgot an old account;
  • moved frequently or changed contact details; or
  • are the legally appointed person handling a deceased family member’s estate.

This is not an eligibility checklist. eGUMIS can only show records that have been submitted to the Registrar and that match the search information.

How the eGUMIS Search Works

Start only at the official eGUMIS portal. The portal provides the official online route for searching unclaimed money. Enter an identification number only inside that government portal—not on an advert, a social-media form or a page that claims it can check on your behalf.

The official FAQ explains that a person or company can search using the appropriate identification or registration number. The initial search can show the number of matching records. To review the available details and proceed with an application, the user follows the portal’s registration and login process, selects the relevant record and continues with the official application steps.

The usual process is:

1. Open eGUMIS directly and run the official search.

2. Register or sign in where the portal requires it to view details.

3. Review the record carefully and select only a record you have reason to believe is connected to you or the estate you lawfully represent.

4. Choose the application route, enter recipient and payment details only in eGUMIS, and upload the required supporting documents.

5. Submit through the portal and check the application status there.

A search result is not the same as an approved refund. The Registrar assesses whether the claimant can prove the right to the record.

Is There a Minimum Amount or Claim Deadline?

According to the official eGUMIS FAQ, the Registrar does not set a minimum amount for a claim. There is also no general time limit imposed by the Registrar for the rightful owner to apply. A submitted application is free of charge.

The same FAQ says that payment is based on the amount submitted to the Registrar without interest. These points do not remove the need to prove entitlement or provide the documents required for the particular record. For the current rules, always review the official FAQ before applying.

What Documents May Be Required?

There is no safe universal document list. Requirements vary with the kind of money, the holder’s information and whether the applicant is the original owner, an estate administrator, a company or a person named in a court order.

The official process can require identification, evidence connecting the claimant to the record, bank information for an approved payment, and confirmation from the company or firm that submitted the money where details do not match. Estate cases can require legal administration documents. For some record types, original supporting documents or an original confirmation letter may need to be provided through the official route within the timeframe stated by eGUMIS.

Do not email or upload documents to a third-party claim agent. Read the document instructions shown for the selected record in eGUMIS and use the official support contacts if anything is unclear.

Can Heirs or Estate Administrators Apply?

The official FAQ recognizes applications from the owner, an estate administrator appointed in a letter of administration, a liquidator in a company winding-up process, and a person or company named in a court order, among other legally recognized parties. A family relationship alone does not automatically establish authority to receive money on behalf of someone who has died.

If you are handling an estate, use the official heir or administrator guidance and prepare only the evidence requested for that case. This guide is not legal advice and cannot determine whether estate documents are sufficient.

How to Avoid eGUMIS Scams

Claims about unclaimed money are often used to pressure people into sharing sensitive information. The official FAQ states that the Registrar does not appoint an individual or company as a middle person or agent for unclaimed-money applications. The search and application process is free.

  • Do not pay a “release,” “processing” or “guaranteed recovery” fee.
  • Do not send your identification or bank details to a link in an unsolicited message.
  • Do not treat a claimed match or amount as a confirmed payment.
  • Type the official eGUMIS address yourself or use a verified government link.
  • Use the portal, not an agent, to review a status or submit a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of money can appear in eGUMIS?

Possible categories include unpaid salary, dividends, insurance claims, credit balances, certain deposits and inactive bank-account balances. The record must have been submitted to the Registrar.

Can an old bank account become unclaimed?

Certain inactive savings, current and automatically renewed fixed-deposit accounts may fall within the unclaimed-money framework after the applicable period.

Is the search free?

The official FAQ says there is no charge for an application submitted to the Registrar. Use only eGUMIS for the official process.

Is there a minimum claim amount?

The Registrar states that it has no minimum claim amount.

Does unclaimed money expire?

The official FAQ states that the rightful owner may apply at any time; entitlement and documents still need official review.

Can an heir submit a claim?

A legally appointed estate administrator or another recognized claimant may apply through the appropriate official route. A relative should not assume that relationship alone is sufficient.

The FAQ directs claimants to obtain confirmation and an explanation from the company or firm that submitted the record where necessary.

Does a search result guarantee payment?

No. The Registrar must be satisfied that the applicant is entitled to the money.

Are third-party claim agents official?

No. The Registrar says it does not appoint agents or middle persons for claims.
